Looking for the right puppy (Leonberger or any other breed) starts and ends with looking for the right breeder. Never consider buying a puppy from any source other than a reputable breeder.
Keep in mind that:
- A pet store is NOT a place to get a puppy.
- A flea market or farmers' market is NOT a place to get a puppy.
- Websites that offer pets for sale on the internet are NOT places to get a puppy.

The most important decision you can make as a prospective Leonberger owner is who your puppy's breeder will be. It is imperative that you find a breeder that you feel comfortable with and trust. Your puppy's breeder should be a resource to whom you can turn for advice, help, and with whom you can share the happiness and milestones that you and your puppy will reach together. Careful research into a breeder will pay big dividends in your puppy's future.
To help you with this choice, the LCA registers and maintains a list of North American Leonberger breeders who have agreed to follow a minimum set of rules established by the breeding regulations of the Club. All dogs approved for breeding by the LCA must first meet the minimum requirements for breeding and health, and are evaluated and rated according to the breed standard.
