You have made an excellent choice by coming to the parent club to find a reputable breeder. Click below for a list of LCA member breeders in good standing. LCA member breeders agree to abide by the LCA Member Practices, however the Leonberger Club of America can neither recommend nor endorse breeders.
As the puppy buyer, you have the responsibility to inquire, educate, and satisfy yourself as to the quality of the breeding program. Make sure that the background of the breeding stock, the quality, health, temperament, condition, and upbringing is to your satisfaction. Visiting the breeder, meeting the parents of the litter, examining the condition of the kennel surroundings, and looking into health testing prior to committing to a puppy will help to ensure you get the Leonberger puppy that suits you.
The breeder in turn will most likely interview you in person, on the phone, and/or with a written questionnaire. You should be prepared to sign a puppy contract, possibly stating spay/neuter requirements and what happens to the puppy if you cannot keep it.
Your breeder should be a trusted partner over the lifetime of your new puppy.
