Breeding Committee: LPN1 Recommendation
Following the Breeding Committee's Recommendation on LPN1 Testing
June 7, 2011
The LCA Breeding Committee recommends: "That LPN1 testing be an optional, but recommended CHIC test, and that it is strongly recommended that one dog in each breeding pair be clear (N/N)." Read the full recommendation.
With the advent of LPN1 testing there is no excuse for any breeder of Leonbergers to not know the LPN1 status of any breeding pair. If breeders know the LPN1 status of each breeding pair, and act responsibly, there need never be another LPN1 affected Leo pup born (Note: LPN1 is just one form of the LPN disease, and a clear test result for LPN1 cannot be taken as a clear result for any other form of the disease). Accordingly, the following is an explanation of how to do LPN1 testing and post the test results to CHIC:
- LPN1 TESTING. Follow the University of Minnesota's submission guidelines and submit with this form. The cost of the test is $85.00.
- POSTING TO CHIC PROFILE. The University of Minnesota sends test results directly to you. Results are NOT automatically submitted to OFA for posting to CHIC like they are with hip, elbow, CERF, and thyroid results.* That means that in order for your Leo's LPN1 test results to be posted to CHIC you need to submit them to OFA yourself, with the $15.00 fee, using this form: In addition to sending the results to CHIC, you may also wish to send the test results to the World Wide Independent Leonberger Database or the International Leonberger Database
- SHARING WITH THE INTERNATIONAL UNION. LCA members are asked to e-mail LPN1 test results to the Secretary of the International Leonberger Union at: secretary@leonbergerunion.com
- OTHER. Although not part of the BC's recommendation, breeders who wish
to can go ahead and test litters before the pups receive permanent
identification, so long as the registered name matches, the test will
eventually be postable to the CHIC profile.
To submit test results to the World Wide Independent Database, forward your test results to mail@leonberger-database.com
Visit ILD to see submission their sumbission guidelines.
On behalf of the Breeding Committee, thank you for following our recommendation, and if you have any questions please do ask!
Sincerely,
Glen Ferguson
LCA Breeding Committee Chair
*The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) co-founded CHIC with the AKC Health Foundation, which is why OFA test results go directly to CHIC.
